The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its five-day warning strike after securing fresh commitments from the Federal Government on some of its demands.
The association announced the suspension in a communiqué issued on Sunday after an extraordinary virtual National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held on September 13, 2025.
NARD President, Dr. Osundara Tope, and Secretary-General, Dr. Odunbaku Kazeem Oluwasola, said the decision was reached following the commencement of payments of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to members who had been owed.
The doctors, who had downed tools on September 12, said the suspension takes effect from 8 a.m. on Sunday, September 14, giving the Federal Government a two-week window to fully implement the agreements reached.
“After due deliberations, and considering the plight of Nigerians grappling with health challenges in the present harsh economy, the NEC resolved to suspend the strike action to allow government a two-week window to address our demands,” the statement read.
NARD also issued a fresh warning to the Oyo State Government to meet the 15-day ultimatum earlier handed down by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Oyo State branch, over unresolved welfare issues affecting doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.
The doctors threatened that failure to resolve the issues within the ultimatum period would compel the National Officers’ Council of NARD to direct all members in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite solidarity strike.
The association further urged other state governments to urgently address the welfare challenges of resident doctors in their tertiary hospitals.
It added that members working in state-owned tertiary health institutions would remain on strike until their respective governments show genuine commitment to resolving their demands.
NARD reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, insisting that its members remain ready to work with all levels of government to ensure accessible and quality healthcare delivery across Nigeria.
