Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has decried what he called the relentless wave of misinformation targeting the Nigeria Police, saying no public institution has suffered greater reputational damage, Peak Newspaper reports.
Addressing Police Public Relations Officers at their 2025 annual conference, he directed them to be more proactive in countering false narratives, stressing that silence is no longer an option.
Egbetokun urged PROs to anticipate issues, issue early factual responses, and back every communication with evidence.
He warned that misleading content, often recycled videos, edited images, and manipulated stories, continues to erode public trust.
While the Force Headquarters cannot respond to every false claim, he said PROs must act swiftly and responsibly to stop misinformation from becoming accepted truth.
Egbetokun also emphasised the need for confidentiality in sensitive matters to avoid compromising investigations or endangering victims.
