Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, citing what he described as worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and unmet campaign promises, Peak Newspaper reports.
In a statement shared on his X handle, Obi said he was inspired by the decision of the British Prime Minister to announce his resignation amid public dissatisfaction with his administration’s performance.
According to Obi, leadership must be accompanied by accountability, noting that President Tinubu had previously demanded the resignation of former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic challenges.
The former Anambra State governor recalled that during the 2023 presidential campaign, Tinubu promised improved electricity supply, stronger security, anti-corruption reforms, and better living conditions for Nigerians.
Obi argued that rather than improving, conditions in the country have deteriorated, with persistent power shortages, rising insecurity, increasing cases of kidnapping, and deepening economic hardship.
“I therefore join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” Obi stated.
He maintained that such a move would promote a culture of responsibility and accountability in public office, while sending a strong message that leadership failures should have consequences.
Obi added that ending the culture of impunity remains critical to building a better future and achieving what he described as “a New Nigeria that is possible.”
