The Ogun State Government has issued a fresh flood alert ahead of the second phase of the 2026 rainy season, urging residents in vulnerable communities to remain vigilant and relocate to safer areas where necessary, Peak Newspaper reports.
The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said NiMet’s seasonal forecast indicates that Ogun could experience intense rainfall of about 360mm in September, increasing the risk of river and coastal flooding.
He identified areas including Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute and Warewa, as well as parts of Abeokuta, among locations that should remain particularly alert.
Coastal communities in Ogun Waterside, Ijebu East and Ipokia, as well as communities along the Ilo and Iju rivers, were also advised to take precautionary measures.
The government attributed the potential flooding to prolonged rainfall, controlled water releases from Oyan Dam and tidal fluctuations that could affect the flow of the Ogun River.
