A grieving mother of Oghenemine Ogidi, the 28-year-old man allegedly killed in a case of police brutality, has claimed she has now lost two sons in separate incidents involving officers of the Nigeria Police Force, intensifying calls for justice and accountability, Peak Newspaper reports
In an emotional account, the woman said her son, Oghenemine, was apprehended by police officers under circumstances that are still unclear, after which news of his death emerged. She alleged that he was subjected to severe brutality while in custody, leading to his death. Her claims have sparked outrage and sympathy from members of the public.
The bereaved mother further disclosed that this was not her first loss, stating that another of her sons had previously died following an encounter with police officers. According to her, the repeated tragedies have left her devastated and questioning the system meant to protect citizens.
In response to the incident, authorities have confirmed that the policemen allegedly involved in Oghenemine’s death have been arrested. The police command stated that the officers are currently in custody and undergoing investigation as part of an internal disciplinary process. Officials assured the public that the matter is being treated with seriousness and that any officer found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The arrest of the officers has been seen by many as a step toward accountability, although civil society groups insist that justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done through a transparent process.
The incident has reignited public concern over police conduct, with human rights advocates calling for comprehensive reforms to address recurring cases of brutality, unlawful detention, and excessive use of force.
As investigations continue, the grieving mother has appealed to the government and relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served for her son and to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
