The political landscape of Kano State witnessed a major shift on Friday as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing growing internal crises and unresolved leadership disputes within the party, Peak Newspaper reports
In a resignation letter addressed to his ward chairman in Diso-Chiranchi, Gwale Local Government Area, the governor said the decision was taken after deep reflection and in the overall interest of the people of Kano State.
According to the governor, persistent conflicts, court cases and factional struggles within the NNPP have weakened the party and made it difficult to maintain unity and stability. He expressed gratitude to the party for giving him the platform to serve the people but stressed that his primary responsibility remains the peace, progress and development of Kano State.
What made the move more dramatic was that Governor Yusuf did not walk alone. Twenty-one members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and all 44 local government chairmen in the state also dumped the NNPP, showing a strong political realignment in Kano.
Although the governor has not officially announced his next political destination, there are strong indications that he may be heading to the All Progressives Congress (APC), following his recent meetings with national political leaders.
The NNPP leadership has reacted strongly, describing the governor’s exit as a betrayal, while insisting that the party remains strong. However, political observers say the development has dealt a serious blow to the party in Kano, where it once enjoyed massive grassroots support.
As the dust begins to settle, Nigerians are watching closely to see what Governor Abba Yusuf’s next move will be and how it will shape the 2027 political battle not only in Kano but across the North.
