The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will resign from his position if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to secure victory in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election, Peak Newspaper reports.
Wike made the bold pledge on Wednesday while meeting members of the Apo Traders Association (also reported as the Association of Apo Mechanic Village) in Abuja. He emphasised that Rivers State is his home and the FCT is where he currently works, insisting he cannot afford to lose in either territory.
“The presidential election is on January 16, 2027. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike stated.
He added: “If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here. If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister.”
The minister, who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while serving in the APC-led federal government, said his administration is building a multi-party coalition in the FCT to deliver electoral success across various offices. He noted that the coalition includes support for candidates, including two House of Representatives aspirants who are former Area Council chairmen.
Wike’s latest commitment comes days after he announced plans to lead President Tinubu’s 2027 campaign structures in both the FCT and Rivers State. He has repeatedly reaffirmed his support for the President’s re-election bid, separate from the PDP’s participation in other elections.
The declaration underscores Wike’s determination to deliver key territories for Tinubu amid intensifying political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
