Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has outlined the conditions that must be met before he can consider the release of several detained native doctors currently facing trial in the state.

The detainees — including popular spiritualists Chigozie Nwangu (widely known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki) from Oba, Eke Hit from Okija, and Onyeze Jesus from Nkpor — were arrested earlier in February over allegations of promoting get-rich-quick rituals, preparing charms for suspected criminals, and misleading youths with false promises of instant wealth.

During a visit to Oba, Nwangu’s hometown, Governor Soludo was met by youths appealing for the release of their native doctor, describing him as a community benefactor.

Responding to the appeal, Soludo stressed that the matter is already before the court and therefore outside his immediate authority.

“You are asking for the release of Akwa Okuko, but I want to say there is a process,” the Governor said. “There is a process for me to follow, and there is a process for the court to follow too. Where we are now is the process of the court.”

He further advised that the only way forward is to allow the judicial process to run its full course, adding that any intervention from his office could only come after the conclusion of the trial.

“When the process is concluded, and if the individuals are convicted, then community leaders can approach me for possible consideration of a pardon,” Soludo stated. “Until then, my hands are tied.”

The Governor’s remarks have generated mixed reactions across Anambra, with some praising his commitment to due process, while others urge compassion for the detained traditional figures.
