Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has declared his support for the adoption of a single-term tenure for state governors, describing it as a move that would enhance efficiency, accountability, and stability in governance, Peak Newspaper reports.
Governor Bago, who has indicated interest in contesting the 2027 election, said a one-term structure would allow leaders to focus on performance rather than re-election campaigns, while also ensuring smoother transitions in government across the country.
According to him, the current two-term system often distracts office holders and fuels political tension, whereas a single-term tenure would encourage governors to deliver results within a defined period and strengthen democratic accountability.
The governor’s comments have added to ongoing national debates on constitutional reforms and the structure of executive tenure in Nigeria.
