Prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Mahmoud Gumi, has alleged that powerful foreign nations are secretly backing terrorist groups operating in Nigeria, warning that the country’s prolonged security crisis may be fuelled by external interests, Peak Newspaper reports

Speaking on Thursday, Gumi said the scale and persistence of violent attacks across the country suggest that local insurgents are receiving support beyond Nigeria’s borders. He argued that the sophistication of weapons used by terrorists and the sustained nature of their operations point to foreign involvement.

“The Nigerian government must look beyond internal factors and investigate the role of foreign powers in this crisis,” Gumi stated, adding that external actors may be exploiting Nigeria’s instability for political and economic gains.

The cleric, who has often spoken on national security issues, urged authorities to intensify intelligence gathering and strengthen diplomatic efforts to identify and counter external influences. He warned that without addressing the alleged foreign backing, Nigeria’s fight against terrorism would remain incomplete.

His comments come amid ongoing military operations against insurgent groups in the North-East and bandit networks in the North-West, which continue to pose serious threats to lives, property, and economic stability.

Security analysts say Gumi’s claims reflect growing concerns among stakeholders that Nigeria’s insecurity may be linked to wider geopolitical interests, though the government has yet to issue an official response to his latest remarks.
