The Federal Government has unveiled plans to collaborate with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to empower inmates after completing their prison terms and to offer free legal aid to those awaiting trial.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, disclosed this during an unscheduled visit to the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja, where he was accompanied by the NBA President, Afam Josiah Osigwe (SAN).
Tunji Ojo said the initiative is designed to decongest correctional centres and prepare inmates for meaningful reintegration into society. The partnership, he explained, will provide skills training and legal support as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises rehabilitation, empowerment, and second chances for Nigerians
