The Federal Ministry of Education, in partnership with the World Bank, has formally launched a vocational skills training programme for more than 1 ,500 youths in Kano State.
Peak Newspaper reports that the initiative, flagged off on Monday, is part of broader efforts to equip young Nigerians with practical trade skills and enhance employability.
Participants will receive training in areas such as carpentry, phone repair, and other technical skills. The training aligns with the federal government’s strategy to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) systems nationwide under projects co‑financed with the World Bank.
Officials said the skills development programme is designed to respond to youth unemployment by building competencies that can lead to self‑employment or job placement.
It also supports efforts to formalise informal sectors of the economy by boosting access to certified training and industry‑relevant learning.
This initiative is part of the ongoing IDEAS TVET project, through which the ministry aims to expand vocational training opportunities across Nigeria and ensure the training is linked with market needs and potential business generation for trainees.
Supporters of the programme argue that vocational skill acquisition can provide a sustainable alternative to formal education pathways and help reduce youth dependence on government employment.
The federal government and its partners are also exploring pathways to offer post‑training support, including access to starter packs and soft loans to help graduates launch small enterprises.
