Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Femi Falana, has secured bail for several activists arrested during a recent protest in Lagos State, Peak Newspaper reports.
The activists were reportedly detained while demonstrating against alleged forceful evictions and other rights-related concerns. Falana, who provided legal representation for the protesters, described their arrest and detention as unconstitutional and a violation of their fundamental rights.
Speaking after obtaining their bail, Falana criticised the authorities for what he termed the excessive use of force against peaceful protesters. He argued that the right to protest is protected under the Nigerian Constitution and should not be suppressed through intimidation or unlawful arrests.
The senior lawyer also condemned the ongoing forceful evictions in parts of Lagos, describing them as illegal and inhumane. According to him, such actions undermine the rule of law and worsen the hardship faced by already vulnerable communities.
Falana called on the government to respect court orders, uphold human rights, and adopt humane approaches in addressing urban development and security challenges.
The development has reignited public debate over citizens’ rights, police conduct, and the legality of forced evictions in the state.
