A former senior U.S. government official has claimed that Donald Trump is “in a panic” as the ongoing conflict with Iran fails to go as expected, Peak Newspaper reports
Karen von Hippel, a former adviser in the U.S. State Department’s counter-terrorism bureau, made the remarks following Trump’s recent threat to “obliterate” Iranian power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened within 48 hours.
According to her, Trump has a history of issuing strong ultimatums that are not always carried out.
“I think he’s in a bit of a panic because he thought the war would go better than it has,” she said.
Her comments come amid growing confusion over U.S. strategy, as Trump recently spoke about “winding down” operations, while reports indicate that more troops are being deployed to the region.
The situation has also raised global concerns, as the Strait of Hormuz — a key route for about 20% of the world’s oil supply — remains under threat, with attacks on oil tankers pushing prices higher.
