Dr. Suhail Anjum, a 44-year-old consultant anaesthetist, admitted to leaving a sedated patient mid-surgery to engage in sexual activity with a nurse at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester on September 16, 2023, Peak Newspaper reports
The patient was undergoing gallbladder removal surgery when Dr. Anjum requested a “comfort break” and left the operating theatre.
He was subsequently found in a compromising position with the nurse by a colleague, Nurse NT, who reported the incident to hospital management.
The entire encounter lasted approximately eight minutes before he returned to complete the operation .
During a medical tribunal, Anjum acknowledged the serious breach of professional conduct and the potential risk to the patient’s safety.
He explained that the incident occurred during a period of personal distress following the traumatic stillbirth of his daughter and the lack of family support in the UK.
He expressed deep regret, describing the event as the lowest point of his career, and requested a second chance to return to medical practice in the UK .
Following the incident, Anjum left his position at Tameside and Glossop NHS Trust in February 2024 and returned to Pakistan.
His actions have raised concerns about professional ethics and patient safety within the medical community.
