Reports have emerged that a senior customs officer, identified as Sani Shuaibu from Yobe State, was shot dead on Monday evening in Kamba, Kebbi State.
Witnesses claim he was attacked by suspected bandits while observing prayers inside a mosque near the Filgila checkpoint.
Shuaibu, who was said to be the Officer in Charge of the Federal Operations Unit of Customs at the Kamba outpost under the Kaduna zonal office, was reportedly rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi after the shooting but was confirmed dead.
He was buried on Tuesday morning in Dukku, Birnin Kebbi, in line with Islamic rites.
The alleged killing has stirred fear among residents and heightened anxiety among security personnel operating in the border community, which has witnessed rising bandit activity.
Sympathisers, including colleagues, friends, and worshippers, were said to have attended the burial.
As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Customs Service and security agencies have not issued any official statement confirming the incident.
