Civil society organisations (CSOs) have welcomed the release of the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as an important step toward early preparation and electoral certainty.
The organisations said the early publication of the electoral calendar would help political parties, candidates, voters, and other stakeholders plan effectively, while also reducing confusion and last-minute changes that often undermine confidence in the process.
In a joint statement, the CSOs pledged to closely monitor every milestone in the timetable, including voter registration activities, party primaries, campaign periods, and election days, to ensure strict compliance with the law. They stressed that consistent oversight is necessary to guarantee transparency, fairness, and credibility.
The groups also urged INEC to sustain open engagement with stakeholders and provide regular updates on its level of preparedness, particularly in the areas of logistics, technology deployment, and voter education. According to them, clear communication will help build public trust ahead of the polls.
While commending INEC, the CSOs noted that the success of the 2027 elections would ultimately depend on effective implementation of the timetable, respect for electoral laws by political actors, and the commitment of security agencies to maintaining a peaceful environment before, during, and after the elections.
