The price of cooking gas in Nigeria has risen by about 13 percent to approximately N1,500 per kilogram, following supply challenges and market pressures affecting the sector, Peak Newspaper reports.
Industry stakeholders, including dealers and retailers, attributed the increase to a decline in supply, which reportedly dropped by about 20 percent to roughly 4,194 metric tonnes, tightening availability across the market.
The development has significantly impacted consumers, with the cost of refilling common household cylinders increasing sharply. For instance, a 12.5kg cylinder now costs substantially more, further worsening the cost-of-living burden for many Nigerians.
Dealers also lamented poor sales despite the price hike, noting that many households are reducing consumption or reverting to alternative cooking methods due to rising costs.
Market analysts say the increase is linked to broader global and local factors, including fluctuations in international energy prices, foreign exchange challenges, and distribution constraints within Nigeria.
