The Commissioner of Police in Delta State has ordered an immediate summary trial (known as orderly room trial) for police officers accused of extortion after a video went viral showing them forcing a man to transfer ₦51,500 while inside a police station, Peak Newspaper reports.

The disturbing video, which spread quickly on social media, shows the officers putting pressure on the man to send the money through a transfer.

Many Nigerians who saw it expressed anger, calling it clear abuse of power and a bad example of police misconduct on the roads and in stations.

According to the Delta State Police Command, the officers involved have already been identified and arrested.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi (or the serving CP at the time of the incident), directed that the matter be handled swiftly through internal disciplinary process to serve as a strong warning to others.

This is not the first time such cases have come up in Delta. In recent months, the command has acted on other viral videos involving officers counting large amounts of cash believed to be extorted from motorists, leading to arrests, queries for senior officers, and detention of others.

The police have also been cracking down on illegal checkpoints and unprofessional behaviour.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, has in past similar cases confirmed that such officers are brought before the Commissioner and face punishment ranging from queries to full trial and possible dismissal.

Extortion by security officers remains a major complaint from Nigerians, especially drivers and traders who face daily demands for money at checkpoints. The Delta CP has repeatedly warned officers against such acts and promised zero tolerance.

The command says the trial will be fair but firm, and the outcome will be made public to rebuild public trust in the police.

This latest action sends a clear message: any officer caught extorting citizens will face quick disciplinary measures. Nigerians are watching to see the full punishment given to the officers involved.
