Nigeria faces the threat of a nationwide blackout as electricity workers, under the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), begin an indefinite strike against the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The union says its members are owed salaries since April 2025 and have been denied basic tools, protective gear, and fair welfare. It is also demanding full implementation of the minimum wage, an end to casualisation, and payment of outstanding retirement benefits.
NUEE accuses TCN management of treating these issues “with kid gloves” and insists workers will not return until their demands are met.
With the strike order for “total compliance” across the country, fears are rising that millions of Nigerians could soon be left in darkness.
