A UK court has sentenced a Nigerian national, Obinwa Obichukwu, to two years in prison after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman at Euston railway station in London.
Peak Newspaper reports that the conviction followed an investigation conducted by the British Transport Police.
Obichukwu, 45, who resides in Hertfordshire, was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on July 21. The court found him guilty of two counts of sexual assault earlier this year after reviewing evidence presented during the trial.
Beyond the prison sentence, the court imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order on the convicted offender. He was also ordered to remain on the United Kingdom’s sex offenders register for the next decade.
Prosecutors told the court that the incident occurred on the evening of August 20, 2023, when Obichukwu approached a woman heading toward Euston station. He allegedly struck up a conversation before making unwanted advances and repeatedly attempting to persuade her to accompany him.
As the woman continued her journey, Obichukwu reportedly followed her, obstructed her movement, and sexually assaulted her near the station entrance. Police said he later pursued the victim into the station and carried out a second assault before she managed to push him away and escape.
Investigators later identified and arrested Obichukwu at his residence. According to the British Transport Police, the victim’s account, supported by CCTV footage, played a crucial role in securing the conviction. Authorities described the offender as a predator who targeted a lone woman, reaffirming their commitment to tackling violence and harassment against women and girls across the railway network.
