Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, who claimed that human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, is unfit to lead a protest in Lagos because he allegedly does not possess a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate in Nigeria, Peak Newspaper reports.
The Police Commissioner, who made the comment during an interview on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, said Sowore was declared wanted to prevent what he described as a “planned violent protest” in Lagos.
“I want to make it abundantly clear that Sowore doesn’t have a NYSC certificate because of punitive reasons. He was posted to Adamawa, and he was evasive. He never did his service,” Jimoh stated.
“So such a person that is not even qualified to bear the NYSC certificate of our great country, Nigeria, will now be coming out to disturb the peace of Lagos? We will not allow it,” he added.
Defending his decision, Jimoh insisted that he acted within his constitutional powers, declaring, “I have the right to declare him wanted. Any person who says I don’t have such a right should go to court.”
However, his remarks have sparked widespread criticism from residents, activists, and legal experts who described the comment as “undemocratic” and “ignorant of the constitution.” CP added.
