Nigeria’s Senate has approved an amendment to the Electoral Act, shortening the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) required election notice period from the previous duration to 180 days, Peak Newspaper reports
The amendment, aimed at streamlining the electoral process, allows INEC to issue election notices closer to polling dates, potentially enabling faster mobilisation and adjustments in election logistics. Lawmakers described the move as part of broader efforts to enhance efficiency in Nigeria’s electoral framework.
Critics, however, have raised concerns that a shorter notice period could limit voter preparedness and political party organisation, emphasizing the need for public awareness campaigns to ensure all stakeholders remain informed.
The bill now awaits presidential assent before coming into effect, marking a significant shift in the timeline of Nigeria’s general elections.
