President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR. The tenure, originally set to expire on August 31, 2025, will now run until August 31, 2026.
This extension, according to a State House press release signed by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, is aimed at allowing Mr. Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete key initiatives critical to the Tinubu administration’s trade and economic agenda.
Among the major projects cited are the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project to streamline cross-border trade, and the full execution of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
President Tinubu lauded Mr. Adeniyi’s “steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” expressing confidence that the extension would further position the NCS to fulfil its core mandates of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and effective border security.
Mr. Adeniyi was appointed Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023, and under his watch, the service has recorded significant strides in digital transformation, anti-smuggling operations, and trade facilitation reforms.
The extension is seen as a strategic move to sustain policy continuity and ensure that the reform momentum within the customs service is not disrupted.
