Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have mourned the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old anchor with Arise News, who died on Monday in Abuja.
Peak Newspaper reports that Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, reportedly jumped from the balcony of her apartment in Katampe, Federal Capital Territory, while attempting to escape suspected armed robbers.
In a condolence message, the First Lady described her as “one of the nation’s young and brilliant minds in journalism,” and prayed for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
Atiku, in his tribute, expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended condolences to her family and the Arise TV team.
Obi described the late journalist as “a brilliant anchor and lawyer whose voice inspired many,” calling her death “a huge blow to journalism and the nation.”
They all called for improved security measures to prevent such tragedies and ensure the safety of Nigerians.
