Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has reacted to the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State, Peak Newspaper reports.
Sani warned about the dangers of overcrowding in detention facilities, drawing attention to the reported conditions surrounding the deaths.
The victims were among suspects arrested during operations against illegal mining activities in Niger State on September 15 and 16. The NSCDC initially attributed the deaths to a suspected disease outbreak, while survivors have alleged that overcrowding, extreme heat and poor ventilation contributed to the tragedy. The exact cause of death remains subject to investigation.
The Federal Government has since constituted a 10-member independent committee to investigate the incident and suspended the officers involved, including the Niger State NSCDC commandant.
Sani’s warning comes amid growing calls for accountability and improved conditions for people held in detention facilities.
