The Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District, Lere Oyewumi, has provided a total of ₦30 million in financial support to 600 artisans across the district’s 10 local government areas to strengthen their businesses and support grassroots economic activities, Peak Newspaper reports.
Each beneficiary received a cash grant of ₦50,000 under the empowerment initiative, according to a statement issued by the senator’s media office.
Oyewumi, who serves as the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, said the programme was designed to support workers in the informal sector and help them cope with the current economic challenges affecting small businesses.
The beneficiaries reportedly include tailors, mechanics, carpenters, hairdressers, technicians and other artisans whose businesses provide essential services within their communities.
According to the senator, the financial assistance is intended to help recipients meet operational expenses, purchase necessary materials and equipment, and improve their capacity to sustain and expand their businesses.
Oyewumi explained that artisans play an important role in local economic activities, noting that providing direct financial support could help strengthen their businesses and improve productivity at the grassroots level.
“Artisans represent the backbone of local productivity. Direct financial support remains one of the most effective tools to offset operational costs, acquire critical needs, and build sustainable livelihoods at the grassroots level,” he said.
The senator added that the intervention was aimed at injecting funds directly into the local economy by supporting small-scale business owners across the 10 local government areas that make up Osun West Senatorial District.
The initiative focuses on members of the informal sector, many of whom depend on their daily business activities to support their families and meet their financial obligations.
The ₦30 million intervention amounts to ₦50,000 for each of the 600 beneficiaries, with the programme expected to provide immediate financial assistance for their respective trades.
