Traffic on Lagos’s Third Mainland Bridge was brought to a standstill today after residents of Oworonshoki blocked the busy highway in protest against ongoing demolitions in their community, Peak Newspaper reports.
The demonstration caused major disruptions for commuters until the arrival of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, who personally led efforts to restore order.
Eyewitnesses said the protesters occupied the bridge for hours, vowing not to leave until demolition equipment was withdrawn from their neighbourhood.
The standoff created a heavy gridlock, leaving motorists stranded.
The Lagos Police Command confirmed that the Commissioner intervened directly to disperse the protesters and reopen the road.
In an update posted on X, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, wrote, “Calm has been fully restored on 3rd Mainland Bridge after the swift intervention of CP Olohundare Jimoh. The Lagos Police Commissioner personally visited the scene, ensured safety and order, and reopened the road. Traffic is now flowing smoothly.”
By late afternoon, calm had returned to the area, with traffic moving freely across the bridge.
Police authorities assured residents and commuters that security personnel remain on ground to prevent a recurrence, while the state government is yet to issue a statement on the wider dispute over demolitions in Oworonshoki.
