The retirement of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Frank Mba has been confirmed following the appointment of AIG Olatunji Disu as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), Peak Newspaper reports.
It is a longstanding custom in the Nigerian Police Force that DIGs retire when a new, more junior IGP is appointed. This practice preserves the hierarchy, seniority, and operational stability of the Force. Serving under an IGP junior in rank to a DIG is considered improper within the Force’s protocol, necessitating the retirement of the senior officer.
While some observers felt DIG Frank Mba was a strong candidate for the position of IGP, the law governing appointments is clear. Under the Police Act, the President appoints the IGP on the advice of the Nigeria Police Council, which recommends suitable candidates based on merit and institutional considerations. The Police Council did not recommend Mba for the position, leaving the President to appoint AIG Olatunji Disu.
Throughout his career, DIG Frank Mba earned a reputation for professionalism and service excellence. His retirement marks the end of a distinguished career in the Nigerian Police Force, with many acknowledging his contributions to policing and security in Nigeria.
