Aliyu Bin Abbas, a former political aide to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) for the 2027 general election, Peak Newspaper reports
Abbas secured the party’s ticket during the ADP National Convention held in Abuja in the early hours of Saturday, marking a significant development in the growing political activities ahead of the next presidential election.
His emergence comes as opposition parties and emerging political movements intensify efforts to position themselves as alternatives amid concerns over economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and governance challenges facing the country.
According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Okpani Dickson, the convention results were announced at about 5:30 a.m., prompting celebrations among delegates and supporters.
Dickson stressed that Abbas’ presidential ambition is independent of his former association with Atiku Abubakar, who is also seeking the presidency under a different political platform.
He stated that Abbas had parted ways politically with his former principal more than two years ago and was now pursuing a separate political agenda focused on youth-driven leadership and national development.
Speaking after his emergence, Abbas described the victory as the beginning of a new political movement aimed at promoting national renewal, inclusive governance, economic transformation and youth empowerment.
He called on Nigerians across ethnic, religious and political divides to unite behind a common vision of progress, justice and prosperity.
Abbas pledged to focus his campaign on building a stronger, more prosperous and united Nigeria, assuring citizens that a new political direction was possible.
Earlier, ADP National Chairman, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, said the convention demonstrated the party’s commitment to presenting itself as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.
He commended party members and supporters for their loyalty and resilience despite the challenges confronting opposition parties.
