Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), ending his 26-year membership in a letter addressed to the Chairman of PDP’s Jadai Ward in Adamawa State

In the resignation letter obtained by Peak Newspaper Nigeria, the two time presidential candidate and PDP founding member stated: “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect”

Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999-2007, expressed gratitude to the party while lamenting its current direction: “As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.

“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for”, said.

The Waziri Adamawa specifically cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for his departure, marking a seismic shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

“It is with a heavy heart that I resign,” he wrote, while wishing the party leadership “all the best in the future.”

The resignation comes after Atiku’s unsuccessful presidential bids in 2019 and 2023 under the PDP banner.

Atiku is leading the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) where he is expected to seek the party’s ticket to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
