Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan stands no chance of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if he decides to contest the 2027 presidential election, Peak Newspaper reports.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Oshiomhole said Jonathan’s influence in the South-South region — once a stronghold of the PDP — has significantly declined since 2015, making it difficult for him to mount any serious political comeback.
“We will defeat him flatly if he comes out because now, the South-South is no longer PDP. So where is he going to start from?” Oshiomhole asked.
The former Edo State Governor argued that Jonathan’s best political years were behind him, adding that only those who do not wish him well would encourage a return to active politics.
“How can Jonathan be a threat? We defeated him before, when PDP was truly PDP. If a man had a PDP at its best, at its peak, and he was defeated, I think only his enemy will push him to go into election,” he stated.
Oshiomhole further advised Jonathan to preserve his status as a respected elder statesman rather than attempt a comeback after already serving eight years.
“If I were to advise him, I would say, Sir, maintain this status. You governed for eight years; you don’t have to govern for nine years. He has managed to demonstrate that out of power, you can still be relevant and at peace.”
He praised Jonathan’s decision to peacefully concede defeat in 2015, describing it as a legacy that earned him global respect.
Similarly, Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), the 2023 Lagos PDP governorship candidate, also advised Jonathan not to heed calls to run in 2027, warning that those urging him to contest against President Bola Tinubu were misleading him.
Oshiomhole concluded by saying Jonathan’s famous quote — “My ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian” — should remain his enduring political legacy.
